Preparing for the challenge
A couple of things came out of our recent Snowdon trip.
Firstly, some of us really need to get our energy levels and hydration sorted.
Thinking we were prepared, with plenty of water and snacks to eat on the climb, some of us (and one of us in particular) found that we did not actually eat enough energy snacks early/regularly enough. The energy levels therefore dropped, and in the heat it became ever more difficult – especially negotiating the zig zags when all you really wanted to do was lie down and curl up in a ball. Running out of water half way up the zig zags didn’t help me either.
Much thought has since gone in to the hydration/energy problem and we are well on the way to ensuring it doesn’t cause us an issue on the challenge.
Secondly, a good point was learned (I hope) by one of our three climbing groups. Everybody was given a map and a text discription of the route we had chosen (the Pyg track leading to the Miner’s track and the zig zags). Pretty straight forward – follow the text instructions, refer to the map (and keep on the green track).
However one of our climbing groups sort of read the instructions, didn’t look at the map (even worse, asked somebody for directions) and ended going up Crib Goch – not the place to be for the inexperienced.
Fortunately they didn’t get too far before they realised their mistake – and the delay let our ‘oldies’ group catch them up (and for a very short time) over take them.
Hopefully they will be more aware of the benefit of their maps next time out.
